The USA Baseball approval will be the new standard, and ALL non-certified bats will be prohibited beginning January 2018.

Hello Naples Cal Ripken and Naples Babe Ruth Parents and Players!

Some big news trickling down from Cal Ripken Baseball that we all need to know.  Please read below in its entirety.  Also, there is an attachment in our Documents section that you will find helpful.   It is very important for both the player and the league to understand the new baseball bat guidelines, when they take effect and where to go for more information.

UNDERSTANDING BASEBALL BAT CHANGES FOR 2018

Since the year 2000, baseball bat manufacturers have steadily improved the
performance of youth baseball bats, while at the same time players have become
increasingly aggressive. Manufacturers have widened the sweetspot on the barrel of
the bat, while at the same time using materials to lighten the bat and design it to
transfer more of the velocity of the pitch and swing directly to the ball.
These factors together with the concern of safety, and the need for the
preservation of the integrity of youth baseball, have caused 95% of youth leagues to
seek the resources of USA Baseball to develop, test and implement a certified
standard for all leagues to follow. The USA Baseball approval will be the new
standard, and ALL non-certified bats will be prohibited beginning January 2018.
The new bats will be made of wood like material, perform much like wood, but
be much lighter than wood and the impact of “bat to ball” will be decreased. The
new bats will have a larger diameter barrel (2 5/8) and a smaller sweetspot.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN ?
1) Only Certified “USA Baseball” bats will be allowed in 2018 for game play,
tournaments or practice.
2) New bats will be made of wood like material (composite) with a larger
barrel diameter and smaller sweetspot.
3) New bats will be easier to make contact, but ball speed coming off the bat
will decrease making “out of the park” Home Runs few, and lightning fast
ground balls will cease to exist.
4) The INTEGRITY of the game will remain the same as when only wood
bats were allowed.
5) The new Certified USA Baseball bats will be available in September 2017.
6) Players will only need one bat when playing other leagues because all
leagues have adopted the same standard.
7) Before purchasing a new bat …Be sure to refer to a “Bat Sizing Chart”
( available at League Office)
